THIS week’s article will be the last one I will submit for publishing in the Craven Herald, bringing an end to my contribution of almost 50 years of local angling news that I believe I started early in 1971.
THE River Aire was in a fishable state for about two weeks before last Sunday’s inclement weather deposited 28 mm of rain and hail onto the already soddened ground, bringing the level up to bank top and putting the river out of bounds to anglers once again.
FOR once in quite a long time, the level of the River Aire has fallen to what it should be at this time of the year and last weekend a few anglers took advantage of the better angling conditions.
ANOTHER large brown trout caught in the Craven district has come to my notice but this time it was not as far back as the 7.5kg fish from Elslack Reservoir landed in 1999.
THE Craven part of Yorkshire was lucky last Thursday when the area had less than 25mm of rain which brought the level of the River Aire to the top of its banks, but with no flooding of the adjacent fields.
IS there ever going to be a dry spell this autumn to bring river levels down and allow anglers to indulge in a spot of fishing which has sadly been out of the question for at least the last month or more?
ONCE again angling faced a bleak outlook last weekend with just over 24 hours of continuous rain which totalled 50.5mm in the Aire Valley and probably a good deal more on the hill tops.
THE level of the River Aire steadily fell from the beginning of last week and for a time it looked like the match scheduled for the Snaygill length would be fished.
THE water of the week appears to be the canal, judging from those who are still wetting a line in and around Skipton.
RIVER anglers look like having to bide their time for a few days at least after all the rain that has fallen in the last week or so.
