This week’s nostalgia picture shows some of the performers who took part in a concert to mark the centenary of Ickornshaw Chapel, near Cowling, in 1976.
Under the baton of Alice Smith, a choir of 70 voices gave a rendition of Mendelssohn’s Elijah to an almost full church. “We were joined by singers from villages, from local chapels and from over the border in Lancashire,” said Vera Robinson, who loaned the picture. “It was a joyful occasion.
“I still keep in touch with some of the members, but unfortunately we have lost quite a lot including the choir mistress, organist, the minister and his wife. Sadly the chapel has been turned into flats, but I have many happy memories.”
Mrs Robinson is pictured behind the left shoulder of one of the principal singers, John Heddle Nash. Other performers included Arthur Gardiner, Madeline Bruce, Audrey White, Jean Ball, Mark Green, Edna Smith, Tom Longhorne, Norman Sneath and David Hoyle. Organist was Mary Robinson.
