Yorkshire has seen a slight increase in farmland birds – but nationally numbers have declined.

Government statistics charting bird populations between 1994 and 2007 show Yorkshire and Humber had a one per cent increase in farmland birds – compared to a 13 per cent decrease nationwide.

Dr Peter Robertson, RSPB conservation manager for Northern England, said: “We are pleased to acknowledge the hard work of many farmers in Yorkshire and Humberside whose efforts to help farmland wildlife seems to be paying off.

"However, there is still more to be done, as a number of the rarer farmland birds such as corn bunting, turtle dove and grey partridge are continuing to decline.
