Joe and Nancy Throup, of Berwick Intake Farm, Draughton, exhibited the champion pen of ten gimmer lambs at the second annual North of England Mule Sheep Association (NEMSA) show and sale at Skipton Auction Mart.

It was a welcome return to the championship fold for the Throups, who last won the Skipton title more than 12 years ago. The couple, who had brought a 184-strong consignment to the two big NEMSA fixtures, saw their title winners sell for top price in show at £205 per head to Matt Thomlinson, of Muggington, Ashbourne.

Like the opening NEMSA show two weeks earlier, Ashley and Rachel Caton, of Otterburn Lodge Farm, Otterburn, again had the victorious pen of 20s and also finished runners-up in the10s.

The Catons have dominated the local NEMSA show arena in recent years. Their 20s’ champions sold for £175 each to T Jackson, of Goosnargh, Preston, and their pen of 10s at £195 a head – the second highest price of the day.

With almost 9,000 gimmer lambs forward, well up on the first NEMSA fixture, a packed ringside ensured robust, level trade throughout, with plenty of running lambs selling at between £95 and £108. Strong tupping lambs started from £106, while untouched running lambs straight off the fell could be bought in the £80s. The overall selling average of £105.30 per head was up £15.40 on last year’s corresponding fixture.

Skipton branch NEMSA chairman Jeff Throup, of Silsden Moor, said he was delighted to present the J Marsden Perpetual Trophy to his brother Joe.

Results and price were: pens of 10 – 1 JC&N Throup, Draughton Moor £205, 2 AV Caton, Otterburn, £195, 3 Ellis Bros, Addingham Moorside, £150; pens of 20 – 1 AV Caton, £175, 2 N Heseltine, Malham £145, 3 KM&L Throup, Silsden Moor £140.
