Gisburn Auction Marts’ Christmas Prime Cattle Show was dominated by Craven young farmers.
Judge was 18-year-old Harry Wood, who after much deliberation awarded the championship to the first prize winner of the young handlers class, a British Blue steer, born in May 2010, and exhibited by 19-year-old Clare Cropper on behalf of Cropper & Mellin, Long Preston.
The victor went on to make the top price of £2,901.60 (520p/kg) when sold to Knavesmire Butchers, York.
The first £500 from the sale was donated to the Harry’s Star charity, set up in memory of Harry Marsden-Mellin, of Long Preston, who died of a brain tumour last year.
Cropper and Mellin also presented the reserve champion and first prize winner of the best continental heifer class, an April 2010 born Limousin heifer, weighing 592kgs, which sold at £2,072 (350/kg). Next best in the bidding stakes was a 478kg, homebred Limousin heifer, from DM & RE Capstick, of Hellifield, exhibited by ten-year-old Paddy Capstick. She joined Townson & Son Quality Butchers, of Brierfield, for £1,458 (305p/kg).
Premium steers averaged 255p/kg and premium heifers, 247p/kg.
