Well done to seven-year-old Elsa Birch from Skipton for coming up with a winning design for Tesco’s new Click and Collect service. Elsa, who goes to the town’s Christ Church CoE Primary, won £250 for the school and £25 for herself for coming up with a design to be featured on the store’s reusable jute shopping bags. And the store has given 250 bags to the school to hand out to parents. Tesco invited Skipton schoolchildren to come up with a design in order to promote its new service – which allows people to order groceries online and then pick them up at an arranged time at the store.

* Duvets are usually looked upon with fondness by weary Monday-morning commuters but that was not the case for rail passengers on Monday. An errant bedspread brought chaos to the Airedale line – which links Skipton with Leeds and Bradford – after becoming tangled between overhead power lines and a passing train in Keighley. It took more than an hour before the bedding could be freed, during which time several trains had to be cancelled. How it found its way on to the power lines by a bridge near Keighley railway station remains a mystery. A spokesman for Network Rail said while the duvet could have been placed there deliberately, it could equally have been blown there by a gust of wind. The affected train was the 7.01am Northern Rail service from Skipton to Bradford Forster Square, which had been passing through Keighley at about 7.15am with about 75 people on board. Staff at Network Rail, which maintains the lines, got to work and managed to free the power lines at about 8am. But the bedspread was not fully removed from the train’s pantograph – the mechanism which takes power from the cables – until 8.24am.

* Members of Settle Mothers’ Union will be demonstrating their pancake tossing skills next week. Tuesday is Shrove Tuesday – Pancake Day – which heralds the imminent arrival of Lent. And to mark the occasion, the Mothers Union will be serving pancakes at Settle Parish Church between 10am and 2pm. Consumers can choose between traditional and or more exotic fillings all for the reasonable price of £3, which includes a drink. All proceeds will be donated to the Mothers’ Union Make a Mother's Day project.

* Settle popstar John Newman has two entries in a top ten list of love songs. The list by PPL, the company responsible for the licencing of recorded music for online, broadcast and public performance use, issued the chart for Valentine’s Day. The list insists songs contain the word “love” in the title, and Love Me Again and Feel the Love (which he recorded with Rudimental) were ranked 2 and 5 respectively. He missed out on the top spot to someone called Calvin Harris with a tune called I Need Your Love. Being of advancing years, I’ve never heard of it but I’m sure it has a good beat as my grandad would have said.

* Skipton Castle is about to get nationwide attention. It is the location for a new film based on the popular children’s programme and Bafta-winning CBBC show, Horrible Histories. The production team and cast spent two days at the castle shooting footage for the movie, Bill, which is an alternative take on the life of William Shakespeare. It tells how he starts off as Bill Shakespeare, a hopeless lute player and traces his life as he leaves home to “follow his dream”. It stars actors Mathew Baynton, Simon Farnaby, Martha Howe-Douglas, Jim Howick, Laurence Rickard and Ben Willbond. The BBC’s Christine Langan said: “Bill will be a film for all the family to enjoy with original British talent telling a very funny story about Shakespeare.” And, you can visit the castle for free this weekend, using the voucher on page 28 of today’s paper.

* A “good news” coffee morning is being staged at the Swan Inn, Carleton, today. The event – which runs from 9am to 11.45am – will celebrate the return to good health of 21-year-old Ellie Benyon, who was diagnosed with leukaemia in January 2013. Guests will include four of the original Calendar Girls and proceeds will go to the Teenage and Young Persons Cancer Ward at St James’s, Leeds, where Ellie was treated. The coffee morning replicates a similar event held a year ago, which was organised by the village's Monday Club and raised more than £850 in the space of three hours. And such was its success, landlord Paul Selwood agreed to open his doors for a Coffee and Cakes event on the last Thursday of every month. So far, the events have helped the campaign to save the children’s heart unit at Leeds, Airedale Cancer Support, Marie Curie Nurses, St Mary’s Church, Carleton, Kisiizi hospital and primary school in Uganda, Macmillan Cancer Support, Mission Direct and Carleton Junior Sports.

* Pendle councillors have been left red-faced after critics said their new heart-shaped logo was too similar to that of adult toys retailer Lovehoney. Coun Ken Hartley, of Barnoldswick, said the design, which could have appeared on signs across Pendle, had him “reaching for his blood pressure medication”. Councillors have now agreed to defer the branding exercise until after the next elections. A spokesman for Lovehoney said: “We are very disappointed that Pendle councillors have rejected their new logo because of its likeness to ours. We'd like to spread a little sexual happiness to the good people of Pendle who buy our products in huge numbers. If any of the councillors who objected to the logo would like to contact us, we will happily supply them with a free sex toy of their choice.”

* Swimmers at Craven Pool and Fitness Centre in Skipton are set to be the first in the country to try new swim-fit sessions. The Swimfit Activate sessions have been developed by experts at the Amateur Swimming Association and will be led by expert instructors. Their aim is to help swimmers achieve their health and fitness goals. The first session is due to take place on Tuesday, March 4 when triathlete and duathlete Katie Hewison will answer questions and give advice.

* Many apologies to those of who tried to contact us through our main switchboard number - 01756 792577 - this week. A glitch on the system prevented many callers from getting through and wiped any messages left on our answerphone. I’m told the problem has now been fixed so it should be business as usual.
