A RAM lamb from Procters Farm in Slaidburn was crowned male and overall supreme champion at the 33rd annual two-day show and sale of pedigree rams and females staged by Northern Area Texel Sheep Breeders Association at Skipton Auction Mart.

The February-born title winner, Procters Viceroy, was shown by Jennifer Aiken and sold locally for 1,400gns to Harold Peel in Embsay.

The day’s top call of 3,400gns fell to a February 2013-born shearling ram from husband and wife Simon and Audrey Taylor, who run the Dearne House flock in Cumberworth, near Huddersfield. It sold to Keith and Sarah Bradley, of Dacre Banks, near Harrogate.

David Houghton, whose Tophill flock is based at Affetside, near Bury, stepped up with the first prize shearling ewe, female champion and reserve supreme champion. She sold at 1,400gns to Mrs S Fitton in Kearsley, near Bolton.

Reserve male champion was the second prize ram lamb from the Loxley flock of Giggleswick’s John and Alison North. The January-born Loxley Va Va Voom sold for 1,350gns to the Keighley family in Leathley, near Otley.

And the reserve female champion was the second prize February-born shearling ewe from James Robinson, who runs the Kaker Mill flock in Carnforth, near Lancaster. She made 1,000gns on joining the Hellifield-based Gillians Laithe flock of young up-and-coming breeder William Watson.

Mother and son Jennifer and Luke Lodge, from Moss, near Doncaster, also performed well in the shearling gimmer class, each selling prize-winning entries at 1,000gns. Luke presented the third in class while his mother was responsible for the fourth prize winner. Both joined the same local buyer, John Beckwith, of Gargrave.

The first prize shearling ram came from the Deneside flock of 2102 Skipton Texel supreme champion David Nesbitt, of Winston, near Darlington. The 18-month-old sold for 800gns to Neville and David Harrison, of Slaidburn.

First prize in the ewe lamb show class fell John and Linda Mellin, who run the Hull House flock in Hellifield. Their February-born prizewinner achieved top price in class of 400gns when returning to North Craven with John and Alison North.

Still with the ewe lambs, the third prize winner from the Pergill flock of Jill and Margaret Perrings in Rathmell made 210gns.

The ram lamb section was eclipsed with the final lot of the day from Peter Woof’s Stainton flock near Kendal, which sold for 2,000gns to G Pyman in Penrith. The Stainton flock also sent out the third prize ram lamb, bought by JR and A Blades, of Muker, for 1,300gns.
