THE Geldard family clinched a memorable championship and reserve championship double at the milestone 10th anniversary show and sale of pedigree breeding females staged under the auspices of the British Charollais Sheep Society at Skipton Auction Mart.

Father and son John and Richard Geldard, who run the Wraycastle flock at Low Foulshaw Farm, Gilpin Bridge, won the Skipton title with their first prize shearling ewe.

Scanned carrying twins, the victor sold for 720gns to Messrs Beaumont of Longridge.

Another of their shearling ewes picked up first prize honours in a special anniversary show class open to members of the society’s northern region, which covers Yorkshire, Lancashire and Cumbria.

Also scanned carrying twin, the ewe was awarded the reserve championship by the show judge, British Charollais Sheep Society chairman David Mawhinney.

He described his two principals as “super sheep with very little between them”.

His chosen reserve champion, which was also the second prize shearling ewe, made the top price of 950gns when sold to to Messrs Tindall of Linton Springs, Wetherby.

Charles and Valerie Marwood, whose Foulrice flock is based at Whenby, York, were again prominent among the prizewinners with the third prize shearling ewe, which was sold for 550gns to S Cummings.

Another Marwood shearling ewe, scanned in-lamb, was awarded second prize in the northern region show class.

The Marwoods were also responsible for the first and second prize ewe lambs. The red rosette winner sold for 600gns to Messrs Tindall with the runner-up making 400gns, claimed by Kenton Foster.

The third prize ewe lamb was shown by DC Green, of Sutton, near Ely, and sold for 480 gns to JD and V Towers & Son, of Farleton.

Geoff and Carol Watson, who run the Sulwood pedigree flock at Eastbrook Hill, Desborough, stepped up with the first prize ewe and Colin and Ros Bowen, of Gwyndy, Llandeloy, took second in class with a ewe, scanned with twins.

The remaining prizewinner, third in the northern region show class, was a shearling ewe from husband and wife team Stephen and Nicola Hodgson, of Patrick Brompton, Bedale.
