CALTON farmer Simon Foster achieved £1,260 for Hereford steer at Gisburn Auction Marts' fortnightly sale on Saturday.

Bill Heaps, of Heath Charnock, Chorley, topped the sale with a Simmental cow with twin Simmental heifer calves at foot which sold for £2,060 to Jeff Wearden, of Whalley.

Suckled calves attracted a strong trade with many buyers from East Yorkshire present. Topping this section was JAC Blake, of Burnley with a five-month-old British Blue steer,which sold for £925.

There was a strong trade for the first in-lamb sheep of the season - with Robert Towers, of Farleton, achieving £325 for an Charollais ewe scanned in lamb with twins to a Beltex ram. She sold to Neville Smith, of Lothersdale.

Alex and Gemma Brown, of Tockholes, Darwen, topped the Texel ewe lamb section with an empty well-grown lamb which sold for £230 to T Guy, of Barnard Castle.

Beltex sheep gurus Anthony Thompson and Emma Dalby, of Foulridge, presented a pen of ten Beltex store lambs which picked up the first prize rosette in the Continental class and later in the day the overall champion pen of store lambs. They sold for £95 to Kevin Marshall, of Otley.

Next lots under the hammer were a run of smart, Beltex cross store lambs from the same vendor which sold for £94, £89, £86 and £83.

Ronnie Johnson, of Bolton by Bowland, was in them money when he sold his second prize pen of Texel store lambs £78.50

The next breeding and store cattle, sheep and pig sale is next Saturday, November 29, which includes special Christmas shows of cattle and pigs, a special entry of 20 pure Texel and Charollais ewes due for January from Andrew Bailey, of Eldroth, and a Border Fine Arts model sale.
