PHILLIP Summers set a new auction record at Skipton Auction Mart's spring calf show on Monday.

Mr Summers, of Clayton, Bradford, who had never won the calf championship before, sold his champion six-week-old British Blue bull for a record-breaking £710.

Mr Summer beat the Sowray family, of Bowes Green Farm, Bishop Thornton, who won a number of championships at Skipton in 2014.

However Shaun and Peter Sowray still had a good day with a Limousin bull, first in its class and reserve champion, selling for another high price, £630.

The Sowrays also took first and second prize in the British Blue heifer category and second prize with a British Blue bull.

Third prize for British Blue heifers was taken by JP and KE Hartley, of Beamsley, while second prize Limousin bull was claimed by RD Metcalfe, of Grange Farm, Brearton, who also sold a Limousin cross heifer for £305, top price in class.

Other vendors such as Fred Houseman and John Marshall, of Monk Ing, had some strong runs with an average of £434 for British Blue Bulls. Strong prices were also received for Aberdeen Angus calves with bulls averaging £251 and heifers averaging to £268.

The show was judged by Samantha Asquith, of Otley, and sponsored by Forfarmers, which was formerly known as BOCM Pauls, the regular sponsors for Skipton’s calf shows.
