BARNOLDSWICK will become a food lovers delight during St George's Day celebrations this weekend.

While St George's Day activities take place on the town square, the annual Food Festival will be held in the Rainhall Centre from 10am to 3.30pm on Saturday.

The food festival will showcase food retailers in the town, with a town taster trail, where samples will be available to try and those who follow the trail will be entered into a prize draw.

Also part of the festival is the popular cake-off, which last year raised funds for the Yorkshire Dales Mining Museum in Earby.

"We are looking to see who can bake the most scrumptious cake in Barlick," said Rainhall Centre manager Ann Whitaker.

To enter people should bring their cake along before 11am and have it judged by Gail Pizer, the chef from Utopia at Broughton Hall.

The cakes will then be sold to raise funds for the local Tuesday Seniors Club, which is run by volunteers and takes anyone needing care out for a day to the community centre to give their carers some respite.

There will be several prizes and vouchers to be won for the cake-off, the trail and a quiz, all of which have been donated by local traders.

The festival will feature cookery demonstrations and activities, including a ceremonial cutting of the pie, made by local councillor David Whipp, that won the World Pie Championship in February.

Yesmien Bagh Ali, from Amaali of Skipton, who has cooked alongside Madhur Jaffrey and Jamie Oliver, will do chapati-making workshops.

Gail Pizer will get everyone in the mood for summer by demonstrating a red rice, roasted vegetable and cranberry salad.

Cafe Julia will show how to make healthy Mediterranean food for less and Thai Food and Spices will demonstrate a Thai dish.

On the sweet side, Techla Wood from Ayni will demonstrate how to make raw chocolate at home and the centre will provide advice on keeping bees.

The event is being supported by Barnoldswick Town Council.
