NUMEROUS readers identified last week's Craven Curiosity as a box camera.

Indeed, many gave detailed descriptions and suggested the model.

Among those guessing correctly were Sam Moore, Margaret Waterhouse, Ronald Chapman, Syd Smith, Molly Preston, David Heather, Geoff Hanson, Phil Dore, Steven Mawdsley, Cath Cooney, Maureen Batty, Allan Friswell, Brenda Wood, Elaine Craddock, Les Frost, Lesley Mason, Jonathan Mosley, Maurice Benson and Alice Quartin.

Experts from Craven Museum and Gallery tells us the camera dates from around 1916 and was produced by Eastman Kodak, based in New York.

And they add: "There is a black Rexene box with a leather handle. The camera is produced from wood and measures 145mm in length, 105mm in width and 84mm in depth. The interior is removed by unscrewing a winder on the side to uncover the film. An empty spool is in-situ and the film is viewed through the rear viewing glass.

"These cameras are famously known as ‘Brownies’ and were one of the first mass-produced handheld cameras, which spawned many varieties."

All items featured in this column can be viewed at the museum, which is run by Craven District Council and is in Skipton Town Hall.

It is open Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, from 10am to 4pm.

Meanwhile, we are inviting guesses about this week’s mystery object.

Suggestions can be emailed to news@cravenherald.co.uk, to arrive no later than noon on Monday
