SEVERAL readers managed to identify last week's mystery object - it was a button hook used for fastening ladies' shoes and boots.

Among those with correct guesses were Molly Preston, Dinah Frank, David Henderson, Geoff Hanson and Maureen Batty.

Experts at Craven Museum and Gallery tell us: "The mystery object is a folding button hook, which was used as an accessory on women’s costumes. It was made from steel and is shaped as a ring. The button hook is on a pivot.

"The purpose of the button hook was to draw the small buttons through the opening of the buttonholes of the leather. The hook end is inserted through the button hole to hold the button into place. It measures 59mm in length and 40mm in width.

"The manufacturer was the Spindle Shop based in Embsay."
