Rail trip for business people

Owners and staff from small businesses along the Settle-Carlisle corridor have been invited to join a "familiarisation" trip on the famous railway.

They will be joined by workers from tourist information centres for a journey on the line on Wednesday April 9.

The event has been organised by the Settle-Carlisle Enterprise Network (SCENe), with the support of Northern Rail, the company that runs the train services.

Group travel has been arranged from all stations along the railway, based on trains departing Carlisle at 8.53am, Leeds at 10.56am and Bradford Forster Square at 11.11am.

The event provides an opportunity for business people to spend time "networking" as they travel and to collect and distribute tourist literature.

"The April 9 programme includes travel to Saltaire, a UNESCO World Heritage site," says organiser David Alison, of Tracks North Tours. "Following morning coffee, the group will enjoy a guided tour of the Victorian village built by Sir Titus Salt to house his mill workers and their families. After lunch in the Victoria Hall, there will be time to explore the shops, galleries and exhibitions at Salts Mill, including David Hockney's paintings and opera sets."

SCENe's origins lie in the joint effort by many thousands of people to save the Settle-Carlisle railway from a closure proposal in the 1980s. The line was eventually reprieved in 1989 and is now a major tourist attraction as well as providing commuter services into Leeds and Carlisle.

Tickets for the event cost £15 (£12 for SCENe members. A booking form is available by email from ruth@annison3. freeserve.co.uk and further details are available from Mr Alison on 015349 824666 or email tracks.north@virgin. net.
