Lifesaving help for Responders

Hellifield First Responders have a new dummy to practise their lifesaving skills on.

The "Resusci Anne" dummy was bought with contributions from Skipton and Craven Lions and has proved useful in training sessions and to demonstrate cardio pulmonary resuscitation. Last week the group gave a demonstration to Hellifield Primary School.

The group is made up of trained volunteers who are called out by the Yorkshire Ambulance Service as a quick, local response to potential heart attack or cardiac arrest victims. They can often get there before an ambulance arrives.

The group averages one call-out every two to three weeks and covers Otterburn as well as Hellifield.

The responders carry a medical bag containing equipment including an automated external defibrillator and an oxygen cylinder.

They are always looking for more people to join. Group co-ordinator Jeff Perris said: "Anyone interested should not be put off by the thought they cannot commit to giving a lot of time regularly.

"We have members who can respond regularly, but we also have members who, for various reasons such as work or family commitments, can only volunteer a few hours every now and again."

First Responders are trained by the Yorkshire Ambulance Service and attend a three-hour reassessment session every six months. For information, call 01729 851389.
