A MAN who claimed he had been set up by police said he was dragged down the street "like the biggest scamp in the land". A court heard how the Silsden overlooker had been arrested and charged with being drunk on the premises of the Midland Railway Company at Keighley. A railway constable said he found the man leaning against a wall and said he was in such a drunken condition that he fell on the platform and was taken into custody for his own safety. However, the prisoner said the constable had knocked him down and insisted he had never had a drop of beer, except for one pint in Silsden earlier in the day. He also said he had his young daughter with him who would support his version of events. An additional constable was then called to give evidence and he said that when the prisoner came into the station he was in a "very drunk" condition, but the man said he had never seen the officer in his life. The court claimed the man was doing his case no good by proceeding further and he was convicted and fined. |
