100 years ago At Skipton Rural Council, it was recommended that steps should be taken to eliminate the nuisance caused by paper and other rubbish from Barnoldswick Urban Council's tip. 100 years ago The New Brighton Saw Mills Co, Gargrave, brought an action against Patrick Mills, labourer, under the Employers and Workman Act. The company sought to recover 18 shillings - one week's wages - in default of his having failed to give proper notice when leaving their employ. The plaintiffs said there was a large poster setting out the terms of employment which the defendant would have passed daily. The defendant said he could not read and the rules had not been explained to him. The bench ordered the defendant to pay the 18 shillings.

This, if passed, would put out of court about 25,000 "other vets" who, the Herald said, may not have the necessary mystic letters added to their names, but whose experience was far more worthy than fancy diplomas.

100 years ago The announcement of the decision of the newly-formed Threshfield Golf Club to allow golf on Sundays was met with dismay. The club confirmed that play would not take place before noon on Sunday and that no caddies or Sunday labour would be allowed. With such restrictions, the club argued that it would cause no more harm than going out walking or driving.

100 years ago It was reported to Skipton Council that in some instances owners of houses were letting them out to their wives or others in order to get an allowance of a 25 per cent reduction in rates. The legality of the custom was questioned, but the reply was that the arrangement was not an evasion of the law.
