Young musicians from Skipton Music Centre’s Junior Wind Band will have an opportunity to perform at the Northern Chamber Orchestra’s Vivaldi and Spring Classics concert on Saturday.

The young musicians have been working with the NCO’s music animateur, Andy Smith, to develop their own piece of music, Spring – taking inspiration from Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons.

As well as learning about composition techniques, the band has rehearsed the piece and will perform it under the baton of one of the NCO’s principal players, Louise Latham, at the concert at Christ Church, Skipton.

Skipton Music Centre has developed strong links with the NCO and the current initiative enables members to generate their own ideas using Baroque composition devices, just as Vivaldi would have done in the creation of his much-loved masterpiece.

Pip Jopling, Skipton Music Centre manager, said: “We are delighted to welcome Andy Smith and other members of the Northern Chamber Orchestra back to Skipton Music Centre this year.

“Our involvement with the Northern Chamber Orchestra gives our young musicians a unique opportunity to explore unfamiliar and inspiring aspects of music-making, under the direction of world-class musicians.”

As well as performing Vivaldi’s virtuosic The Four Seasons, the NCO will be giving a world premiere performance of a new work, Elegy for Diana, by Embsay composer and conductor Arthur Butterworth. It is a personal tribute to his late wife, who died last year.

Also on the programme is Corelli’s Baroque Concerto Grosso, Opus 6 no 3, Mendelssohn’s String Symphony no 1, Delius’s Aquarelles and Grainger’s Irish-reel-inspired Molly on the Shore.

The concert starts at 7.30pm and tickets are available from the NCO box office on 0161 247 2220 and in person from Skipton Tourist Information Centre. They are priced £15 for adults, £7 for students and the unwaged and free for 18s and under.
