SKIPTON: The ninth Art in the Pen will be staged this weekend.

It is a unique art exhibition which sees the cow and sheep pens of Skipton Auction Mart transformed into mini art galleries out of which local and national artists exhibit and sell their original works of art.

More than 130 artists will take part in this year’s event, which will be open from 10am to 4pm on Saturday and Sunday.

On show will be contemporary art, including sculptures, photography, glasswork, textiles, recycled materials, watercolours, print, ceramics, pen and ink, woodwork, etchings, and, of course, paintings.

Admission is £2 (free for under 16s), which includes a catalogue detailing the work of the artists.

lSkipton, Craven Museum and Gallery is hosting its summer exhibition, Bikes, Legs, Action!

It is designed to highlight the ins and outs of cycling. Visitors can view the helmet of 2012 Tour de France winner Sir Bradley Wiggins, inspect Team Sky Rapha equipment and find out about tactics and nutrition of cyclists.

The museum is located in Skipton Town Hall and the exhibition runs until Saturday, September 20.

lSkipton Folk Unplugged is planning a quiet August.

It has no booked artists for the month. Instead it will have singer nights in the Narrowboat pub every Monday from 8.30pm.

The next booked act is on September 8 when the group, hissyfit, entertains.

SETTLE: Victoria Hall has teamed up with the North Ribblesdale Area Moving Picture Show (TRAMPS) to show a series of films during August.

On Wednesday, it will screen the family film Babe, which tells the story of a pig who wants to be a sheep dog, while on Wednesday, August 27, it will show Tous Les Matins du Monde (All the Mornings of the World).

Starring Gerard Depardieu, and his son, Guillaume, the film is set during the reign of Louis XIV and shows the eminent musician Marin Marais looking back on his young life when he tried to become a pupil of Monsieur de Sainte-Colombe.

lSettle Photographic Group is once again holding its annual exhibition with a difference.

It has organised a town trail of framed photographs in local shop windows and this year there are about 90 pictures to hunt down.

The trail will run until Wednesday and free maps can be obtained from the tourist information centre, local shops or downloaded from settlephotos.org And once the trail finishes, the work will be transferred to Clapham Village Hall where it can be viewed over the Bank Holiday weekend Entry will be free and the hall will be open from 11am to 5pm, Saturday to Monday. Refreshments will be available.

lThe Folly is staging an exhibition called War Beckons, which focuses on the early stages of the war and the effects it had on Settle and the surrounding district.

Visitors can learn about the recruitment of volunteers and the commandeering of local horses following the outbreak of war, as well some of the lesser-known stories, such as the Belgian refugees who were brought to Settle and the efforts of local people to raise money and support the troops.

It will give residents and visitors a greater understanding of the sacrifices that were made by the people of North Craven throughout the war.

And running alongside it is another exhibition, Journeys Through a Family Archive, which explores the story of the Riley family and their many involvements in the life of Settle and district over nearly 100 years.

Both exhibitions run until November 2.

lThe Gallery On The Green - housed in a former telephone kiosk - is hosting Rugged Faces, An Exhibition of Travel Portraits.

The exhibition showcases16 powerful and thought-provoking black and white portraits, taken mainly in India, by former Settle resident Ray Price, who now lives in York.

It features work by Hester Cox, Francesca Roberts, Frank Gordon, Pam Grimmond, Ross Brown, Jenny Devereux, Margaret Uttley and Andrea Hunter.

It will run until Tuesday, September 4.

lChris Rigby is exhibiting his landscape paintings at Linton Court Gallery.

Chris, who has exhibited previously in Settle, is showcasing landscape studies painted in both oil and watercolour at locations throughout the British Isles.

They include large paintings of the coast of Scotland and Ireland and studies of the Lakeland Fells.

The exhibition, Landscapes, runs until Saturday, August 30.

The gallery is open on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays and at other times by appointment.

lSettle Music will hold one of its popular guitar sessions tomorrow.

It will take place at Settle Primary School from 7pm to 9pm and the cost is £5.

All styles and abilities are welcome.

FOULRIDGE: Earby’s Theatre Going Group has organised a charity tribute concert in aid of the Earby Community Minibus.

It will star Alex Taylor as Gary Barlow and Jim McClaine as Elvis and there will be a full supporting cast.

GRASSINGTON: Grassington Players will take on another role next Saturday, August 23.

They will act as fundraisers at a coffee morning in Church House from at 10am.
