SINGER-SONGWRITER Jen Armstrong has used her talents to write a song which she hopes will encourage people to register as organ donors.

Jen, who hails from Hetton, and won the Rock the House competition in 2011 - it saw her perform in the House of Commons - has created a youtube video, Say Something.

All music profits from sales of the single, which took 12 months to create and features Jen as the vocalist, will go to organ donation charities all over the world.

The video was shot on the set on TV drama Holby City.

The Leeds College of Music graduate and former student at Skipton Girls' High School was inspired to create the work after witnessing a friend's mother wait for transplant surgery.

Christina Keen was on the list for more than a year while her music teacher son, Rex Pearson, watched helplessly on as she slipped away from who she was.

Jen said: "He never realised just how long and frustrating the waiting list can be. It can feel like a lifetime watching someone slowly succumb to their illness knowing there is nothing you can do.

"Thankfully, and with the amazing work done by Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge, she received the life-saving operation just in time thanks to the generosity of someone who had decided to register as a donor.

"Neither him nor I have much we could give to help the situation financially, but we're both musicians, part of an amazing YouTube community and know a lot of amazingly supportive people online and offline, and we wanted to create a piece of music and campaign to help raise awareness around the situation

"The message is simple, take a look at the video and listen to the song, when it's done, reflect on registering as a donor or consider a share and know that your one click action could actually be saving a person's life."

Jen started writing music at the age of 12 and, as a teenager, made it to the final ten of the Make It, Break It competition sponsored by Paul McCartney's Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts.

She then won a place at the Leeds College of Music and graduated with a Masters degree in performance, finishing in the top six of her year.

She later attending a music conference in LA in November 2011 and saw her career take off.
