THE winners of a national poetry competition organised by poetry and prose champions Settle Sessions will get a chance to read them out at a special prize giving evening.

It will be held at the town's Victoria Hall as part of this year's National Poetry Day on Thursday, October 6, and graced by established poets John Killick of Settle and Yorkshire poet Michael McCarthy.

The prize winners - both youngsters and adults - from throughout the country will recite their winning poems and others will be given a chance to read their favourite verse.

Local prize winners are first Hannah Chapman from Giggleswick primary, second Lauren Taylor from Bentham school and third Joel Monks from Giggleswick primary.

Craven’s funniest poem was won by Joan Butler from Austwick with her verse "Hawk Talk".

First prize in the country wide entries went to Jenna Plewes from Alvechurch with "Driving Home", second to Jenny Morris from Norwich with "Box Room" and third Maggie How from Grange-over-Sands with "Between us".

Also commended were Tricia Robinson from Settle, Jane Eagland from Lancaster, Joan Butler from Austwick, Kerry Darbyshire of Kendal, David Smith from Middlesbrough and Rona Laycock from Avening.
