CHAMBER choir Cantores Salicium will present a special concert entitled Reflection and Joy at 4pm on Sunday in Giggleswick School Chapel.

The concert is dedicated to the memory of Giggleswick teacher Philip Andrew, who was a member of the choir for seven years and who tragically died in a car crash in mid-December last year.

Cantores Salicium musical director Lindy Williams said: “Phil’s warm personality, sensitive musicianship and magnificent tenor voice made a wonderful contribution to our music-making. We all miss him - as do all those who knew him - but we feel that he left us a lasting musical legacy. This is reflected in the programme for this concert and we include some of Phil’s favourite works.”

The first half of this short concert consists of contemplative choral works by Purcell, Tallis, Byrd, Victoria and Handel.

In the second half, the mood changes with a delightful sonata played by talented young bassoonist, Ben Buckner, who attends Ermysteds School in Skipton.

Lindy said: “In Cantores Salicium we have a policy of giving opportunities to gifted young players and I am delighted Ben can join us. Having recently been successful in the audition, on Saturdays from September he will attend the Royal Northern College of Music Junior Department.”

The concert continues with Haydn’s Little Organ Mass before ending with Bach’s uplifting Jesu Joy of Man’s Desiring sung in its original German with the instrumentalists accompanying.

Lindy added: “This event promises to be both lively and inspiring, providing what will be a fitting tribute to the memory of a special colleague and friend.”

Entry is free but donations are welcome.
