SETTLE gallery Gavagan Art will host the summer exhibition Cornucopia from today to August 24.

The stone vaulted gallery at Gavagan Art has three rooms, and this exhibition is divided into two parts.

In one of the gallery spaces, there will be a selection of original prints and ceramics by London-based Charlotte Hodes.

Charlotte is professor of Fine Art at London College of Fashion, University of the Arts London. Her work in this exhibition is inspired by the 19th century publication The Grammar of Ornament (1856) by architect and designer Owen Jones.

A distinguished artist, Charlotte was appointed first associate artist at the Wallace Collection, London, from 2005 to 2007 and won the Jerwood Drawing Prize in 2006.

Charlotte has a number of solo exhibitions and her work is represented in many public collections including Birmingham City Art Gallery, British Council, New Hall Art Collection Cambridge (now Murray Edwards College) Potteries Museum and Art Gallery, Staffordshire, and the Victoria and Albert Museum.

As a student she studied at the Slade School under Lawrence Gowing, and was a student of Paula Rego, Stanley Jones and John Hoyland.

Paula said: “In Charlotte’s pictures the pattern does not stay within the outline. It overlaps and takes on an existence of its own.”

In the other two gallery spaces, there will be work by both figurative and abstract artists.

Figurative paintings by the Cornish-based artist Richard Tuff can be seen alongside Karolina Larusdottir’s haunting lithographs and William Clayton’s trompe-l’œil oil painting.

Abstract paintings and original prints by Jacquie Denby and David Cook will also be on display.

Mary Gavagan, owner of Gavagan Art, said: “Our selection of work for this summer brings together a range of styles and techniques. This exhibition is in two parts, offering visitors to see a wide range of work both figurative and abstract.”

The exhibition in Settle Town Hall will be open 11am to 4pm from Thursdays to Saturdays.
