UPPER Wharfedale Heritage Group will hold an exhibition from this Saturday to Sunday, July 29, at Long Ashes.

Entitled Tales That Timber Tells it shows buildings in Upper Wharfedale have been explored by the group through the study of their timbers.

The main focus will be on the results of tree ring dating (dendrochronology) in Kilnsey where the earliest timber found was shown to be growing at the time of the Norman Conquest.

The exhibition also looks at a number of other aspects of timber detective work, including changes in construction style over time, the significance of various marks on timber, the influence of the Baltic timber trade and the discovery of old cruck frames re-used in later buildings.

The tales explored in the exhibition take viewers from the riches of the monastic period to daily observations of 19th century farming life written on the back of a barn door.

The exhibition can be seen at Long Ashes Park Leisure Centre between 9am and 7.30pm daily. Entry is free.
