Skipton Choral Society,
Christ Church, Skipton
SKIPTON Choral Society was in fine voice for its summer concert. The concert opened with a spirited performance of Mozart’s Coronation Mass.
A particular pleasure was the exquisite singing of the solo quartet of Lyndsey Durant, Adam Piplica, Rob Sturman and Jonty Ward; it is rare to hear four voices blend so well without losing their individuality. Lyndsey’s solo in the Agnus Dei was the concert highlight, with beautiful tone and sensitive phrasing.
In the second half, the choir sang four sacred pieces by British composers, with Stanford’s majestic C major setting of the Evensong canticles as the centre-piece. The choir responded magnificently to the challenges of this music; particularly impressive was the sustained and committed singing in the office hymn Te Lucis Ante Terminum by Herbert Balfour-Gardiner. The fanfares of Vaughan Williams’ O Clap Your Hands brought this highly enjoyable concert to a triumphant close.
