Settle historians Phil and Rita Hudson have brought out a sixth title in their “Take A Closer Look At” series of books.

The couple, involved in running the North Craven Historical Research Group, have focused their attention on Long Preston and written a detailed insight into the history of the settlement.

The book takes the form of a walk around the village which the Hudsons have put together using their own observations.

It also contains photographs and short articles written on a variety of topics.

Houses of interest are mentioned and shown on maps taken from the first edition of the Ordnance Survey map of 1858.

Information on buildings and their occupants have also been added from the Long Preston Tithe Award map and schedule published in the 1841 census.

Further information has been accessed from the Sites and Monuments Records and the Listed Buildings Records.

The book includes details relating to the history of Knowles Cottages, which date from 1614 and were originally built with a bequest from James Knowles. Mr Knowles lived at Mearbeck and learned the cloth trade as an apprentice in Wakefield before going to London and making his fortune.

Other accounts in the book include a railway fatality at the station which killed a member of the Proctor family, a cattle plague in 1865 which threatened the farming fraternity and details of St Mary’s Church.

The book has 64 pages and is priced at £4.50 plus 50p postage. A sum of 25p will be donated to the North Craven Historical Research Group from the sale of each book.

It can be obtained from Hudson History, Kirkgate, Settle, BD23 9DZ, or by ringing 01729 825773.
