Orchestra to premiere piece by young Barnoldswick composer

A piece of music composed by Barnoldswick teenager Vahan Salorian will premiere in Skipton this month.

Although just 17, Vahan, a pupil at Ermysted’s Grammar School in Skipton, has already won acclaim for his composition skills.

His new piece will be played by the Northern Chamber Orchestra at a concert in Christ Church on Friday March 26.

“The orchestra was looking for someone from the area to write a piece and Anne Heaton (from Skipton Music Centre) put my name forward,” said Vahan, who plays a range of instruments including flute, violin and trombone.

He wrote the piece, as yet unnamed, in a month and it will be played by the string section.

Vahan has already composed work for Barnoldswick Brass Band and Settle Orchestra and, in 2008, he won the North Yorkshire Young Composers competition. His winning piece, Voyage into the West, was played by the North Yorkshire Schools Symphony Orchestra at Selby Abbey.

But he will not be present to hear his latest piece being played in public for the first time, as the concert coincides with a musical he has written for Ermysted’s.

“My mum will be in the audience and I hope to go along to the rehearsal,” said Vahan.

The concert will also include two pieces by Handel, Bach’s Suite No 3, Vivaldi’s Spring from the Four Seasons and Barber’s Adagio.

And it will mark the opening of Christ Church as a multi-purpose arts venue. “This is the ideal setting for a wonderful programme of Baroque masterpieces and one 20th century gem, plus the brand new composition by Ermysted’s pupil Vahan Salorian,” said a concert spokesman. “This will be a very, very special concert.”

Tickets cost £12 (students and children £8) from the NCO box office on 0161 247 2220, the local box office on 01756 792809, Skipton Tourist Information Centre or on the door.
