7:20am Thursday 12th August 2010

SKIPTON:

Art in the Pen returns to Skipton this weekend. Now in its fifth year, the exhibition will showcase the work of established and emerging contemporary artists, jewellery-makers, photographers and sculptors around the pens at Skipton Auction Mart.

The event will also be used to launch “Flock to Skipton”, a public art initiative which will eventually see 25 brightly-coloured sheep dotted around the town. All 25 sheep will be on show at the mart before they go to their new locations.

Art in the Pen will open to the public from 10am to 4pm on Saturday and Sunday.

* Craven Museum is hosting a soccer exhibition. Until September 27, visitors will be able to enjoy football photographs and memorabilia.

The “Some Sheep are on the Pitch” exhibition includes a pair of former England captain John Terry’s boots, a 1966 World Cup shirt – when England last won the competition – and visitors can sit on original Wembley Stadium seats.

SETTLE:

Sax Collective makes a return visit to Settle Parish Church tomorrow (Friday). The quartet was a huge success when it visited in 2008 prior to its trip to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

The concert is designed to appeal to families and will start at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £8, including strawberries and cream and fruit punch.

* The Gallery on the Green – housed in a former telephone kiosk at Upper Settle – is staging an exhibition of wedding photographs taken in the 1950s and 1960s by Settle photographer Tommy Faulkner.

* Community singing group Settle Voices is holding its final summer workshop on Monday August 23. It will be led by Jules Gibb, who runs the Picturehouse Choir at Manchester’s iconic Band on the Wall venue and Golden Voices, a group of senior citizens.

The workshop will run from 1pm to 4pm in the Friends Meeting House on Kirkgate. For more information, log onto settlevoices.org.uk or contact Nancy Forster on 01729 822771.

BOLTON ABBEY:

Broughton’s Kitty North has become “artist in residence” at the Devonshire Arms Hotel and an exhibition of her work is on display in the brasserie.

It comprises predominantly Wharfedale landscapes and will change to reflect the seasons. The current selection of paintings will be on show until August 31 and can be viewed between 3pm and 6pm.

COWLING:

Airedale Male Voice Choir will give a concert at St Andrew’s Church next Saturday, August 21, at 7.30pm.

The singers will be joined by Colne Ladies Choir for some items.

Tickets cost £6 and are available from Edna Smith on 01535 632487.

MALHAM:

The National Park Centre is staging an exhibition of abstract work by Skipton artist Susan Duffey. The free exhibition, on the theme of “Earth”, will run until the end of August and comprises an 8ft-wide impression of Malham Cove and five others of Gordale Scar.
