South Craven-based KVU Singers will commemorate the centenary of the start of the First World War at its concert next Saturday, April 5.

They will perform two works extolling peace at Christ Church, Skipton, at 7.30pm The first is Karl Jenkins’ The Peacemakers, which is dedicated to the memory of all those who lost their lives during armed conflict and in particular innocent civilians. The text includes messages of peace from figures such as Gandhi, Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King and other inspiring people including Mother Teresa and Anne Frank.

Former hostage Terry Waite has also contributed some words for The Peacemakers.

The other work is Jonathan Wilcock’s Lux Perpetua, which was commissioned as a choral piece on the theme of Peace and Unity and was first performed in March 1999. The text is very poignant.

KVU Singers will be accompanied on the organ by Christopher Enston, who, while studying at the Royal Academy, won several prizes and awards including the Recital Diploma and FRCO. He has performed in US, Canada, France and Italy and his playing has featured in programmes including Silent Witness and Sunday Half Hour.

The performance will also include accompaniment from piano, flute and percussion.
