A TEENAGER from Barnoldswick has been chosen to play with the National Youth Orchestra.

Max Heaton, 16, a pupil at Ermysted's Grammar School, Skipton, was one of six percussionists chosen following an audition in Birmingham.

Max, who started with the piano when he was just five years old, was a member of the National Children's Orchestra, and is also a member of the National Youth Wind Orchestra.

He is now busy rehearsing for three concerts with the orchestra due to take place at Christmas in London, at Easter in Leeds and in the summer in Birmingham.

Part of his Christmas holiday will be spent in London, on a four day training course at Goldsmith's College, while every Saturday is spent at the Royal Northern College in Manchester.

Both his parents, Brian and Anne are music teachers.

"It is a big commitment, but he is really pleased and looking forward to it all," said Mr Heaton.

When he was 13 years old and part of the National Children's Orchestra, he performed in front of the Queen at a diamond jubilee lunch at Westminster Hall, London.
