A FILM dramatically depicting the Holocaust will be screened by Skipton Film Club this Sunday.

Son of Saul will be shown at 5.15pm in the Plaza Cinema, on Sackville Street, Skipton.

The film is Laszlo Nemes' debut as director, and at last year's Academy Awards Son of Saul won Best Foreign Film for its depiction of the Holocaust.

Saul, played by 48-year-old Hungarian actor Geza Rohrig, is a Jewish prisoner who has been made part of the Sonderkommando, inmates who are given privileges in return for policing the extermination of camp inmates.

The film begins inside the gas chamber itself, and there Saul discovers the body of a boy he believes to be his son.

The rest of the film follows his attempts to give the boy a decent burial against the backdrop of a planned uprising amongst the inmates of the camp.

A spokesman for Skipton Film Club said: "Nemes uses cinematic technique to overcome the problem that has haunted many depictions of the Holocaust, however worthy their intention.

"By having the camera stay in tight close up to Saul's haggard face, we follow the terrifying reality of people's appalling and inhumane predicament.

"The film is essentially anti-Hollywood treatment of the subject - eschewing any ideas of redemption or convenient narrative arcs in telling its story."

The evening, which will begin with a short film by local filmmakers, is open to everyone and tickets cost £5.50 for club members and £6.50 for non-members.
