PINSUTI, the Ilkley and Skipton chamber choir, will perform the concert A Rose Without Thorns at 7.30pm tomorrow in Hetton Methodist Church.
A spokesman for the choir said: "This is a small and friendly church with a great acoustic that is ideally suited to the delicate blend of voices that Pinsuti has honed over the years."
The concert is taking place in Lent, and Pinsuti, conducted by Robert Webb, recognises this in the choice of works.
It starts with a celebration of Mary, in Latin in Palestrina’s ‘Stabat mater’, Taverner’s ‘Mater Chrsiti sanctissima’, and ‘Ave Maria’ by Bruckner and, in Church Slavonic, in Rachmaninoff’s ‘Bogoroditsye Dyevo’.
The centrepiece to the concert, Brahms’ complex motet ‘Warum ist das Licht gegeben…?’, moves from existential angst to calm acceptance.
The second strand in the concert consists of song cycles by two contemporary and well known composers: Mealor’s ‘Now sleeps the crimson petal’ and Lauridsen’s ‘Les Chansons des roses’ , which contemplate the rose and its imagery. These are joined by Tchaikovsky’s ‘Legend’, a ‘song for children’ which foreshadows the Easter story, also titled ‘The Crown of Roses’.
The choir spokesman added: "We hope you will once more fill Hetton Methodist Church and enjoy this varied selection of music from the 16th to the 21st centuries."
