LYRICS from some of the best-known rock songs will provide inspiration to more than 300 singers as they prepare for two concerts in the heart of Leeds.

Under the title One Vision, musicians from Skipton choir Rock Up and Sing! will be spreading a message of unity following a tumultuous period in UK history.

The two concerts take place at Leeds Town Hall on Saturday and Sunday.

The programme features songs made famous by acts including Queen, David Bowie, Meatloaf, John Legend, Metallica and more – and the choir members have found the lyrics especially moving in rehearsals over recent weeks.

Choir director Rhiannon Gayle said: "Many of the songs on the programme are very famous and familiar to us.

"However, when we've started to learn them as a choir, we've noticed just how powerful those lyrics are. They're about carrying on in the face of adversity, helping others, and building a fairer world.

"Following the awful terror attacks in the UK, the dreadful fire at Grenfell Tower, and the divisions in politics over the last year, the songs have taken on even more meaning for us. We hope the audiences for the concerts will take away that message of positivity and strength."

Among the songs will be Queen's One Vision, which tells of success in the face of adversity, and their hit with David Bowie, Under Pressure, about the power of love to change the world. They will be combined with Labi Siffri's Something Inside So Strong, recent hit I Lived by One Republic, a lesser-known John Legend song taken from President Obama's inauguration, and many others.

While the songs themselves have taken on special meaning for the singers in recent weeks, Rhiannon believes music in itself has the power to heal.

"Following the Manchester Arena terror attack, we saw the incredible unifying force of music at the One Love Manchester concert," she said.

"Throughout my career, I've seen the way music can bring people together and heal, whether it's collectively or for people individually. I hope this concert will bring some of that sense of positivity to the audience, as much as it has to us as we've been rehearsing."

Rock Up and Sing! will perform One Vision at Leeds Town Hall at 7.30pm on Saturday and at 2pm on Sunday.

Both concerts will raise money for St Gemma's Hospice in Leeds.

Tickets cost £14 for adults or £7 for under 16s and are available from Leeds Town Hall box office on 0113 224 3801 or by visiting leeds.gov.uk/townhall
