AN AMATEUR tennis tournament and family fun day has served-up £2,209 for Airedale Hospital's critical care unit.

The VMbledon event – at Victoria Mills in Shipley – was organised by resident David McDermott, with Erica Hall, from the complex's Weaving Shed bar and restaurant.

There was also an afternoon tea party, at nearby The Quays.

Mr McDermott's 27-year-old daughter Hayley died at the unit in 2012 and this was the third event in her honour. Together they have raised over £5,000.

With a contribution from the Friends of Airedale, the latest fundraiser has paid for a £6,400 Stretchair.

The electronically-operated chair converts from a stretcher at different heights, enabling very ill patients to be transferred more easily to and from their beds.

Helen Taylor, ward sister on the critical care unit, said: "We are very grateful to Mr McDermott and the Friends of Airedale for this donation.

"Getting patients out of bed and sitting up has proven benefits in recovery.

"This new chair will make it much easier and safer for staff to get patients out of bed – and it will be much more comfortable for the patients to sit in."

Eileen Proud, president of the Friends of Airedale, said the charity was pleased to provide the extra funding needed.

She added: "We are always looking for opportunities to work with the local community to raise money for improvements to the patient experience."
