RESIDENTS are being invited to celebrate the Tour de Yorkshire with the inspirational Flying Scotsman film.

Skipton Town Hall will celebrate the Tour de Yorkshire cycle race on Sunday by showing a film which tells the remarkable true story of Scottish cyclist Graeme Obree.

The film, starring Jonny Lee Miller, will be screened at around 2pm, after the final stage of the thrilling race has passed through Skipton High Street.

Back in 1993, as an unemployed amateur cyclist, Obree broke the world one-hour record on a bike of his own revolutionary design, which he constructed out of scrap metal and, famously, parts of a washing machine.

The film tells how Obree overcame financial and psychological barriers to triumph against the odds.

Danielle Daglan, programming and venue development manager at Craven District Council, said: “We’re all looking forward to welcoming the cyclists to Craven for the Tour de Yorkshire.

“It’s always a really exciting event and we’re delighted to be marking it this year with this compelling film, which tells the incredible true story of Graeme Obree.

“So you can watch world-class cyclists zoom past and then come along to Skipton Town Hall for a fascinating insight into what it takes to get to the top.”

The Tour de Yorkshire race caravan will be passing through Skipton at around 11.30am with the race expected to arrive in the town at around 1.30pm.

The film screening is due to start at 2pm but will take into account any race delays.

The film is rated 15 and runs for one hour and 40 minutes.

Tickets cost £5 or £3 for under 18s.
