Sir – With the inclement weather on the east and west coasts, sea birds are taking up wing and moving in land to find food and shelter.
Thirty Canadian geese have taken shelter on the basin like bowl of Whinny Gill Reservoir. They fly off at daylight to feed on the green fields of the Aire Valley and return to the reservoir at dusk.
Cormorants are on the increase causing problems for anglers and fish farms.
Last week I spotted four green cormorants on Whinny Gill diving underwater for a minute and coming up with fish.
The cormorant needs a high intake of fish to survive and fish farms and reservoirs are easy pickings for fish-catching birds.
Owners and managers and anglers are on constant alert to keep the birds away.
