Sir – We are faced with the possibility of reduced bus services not just in North Yorkshire, but in other parts of the country as well.

If we really had “the greenest government ever” as we were promised in 2010, we would now have increased bus services which would be free to everyone, not just the over 60s.

Free bus services would encourage people to get out of their cars, would reduce fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, and save money by getting rid of complicated fare structures.

Free bus services are not really free, of course, so where would this money come from?

How about taxing not just the rich but the mega rich? How about stopping the tax avoidance practiced by large companies? How about scrapping Trident?

The money is there, it all depends on where the politicians’ priorities lie.

It would be nice if the government really did something green for a change.

For the Prime Minister to wear a green tie now and then isn’t enough.
