SIR - On BBC Look North recently it was reported that city centre shops, particularly in Leeds, were worried about the increase in internet sales.

I have been unsuccessful in finding just what I want in major retail outlets but have been told by the assistants to go online to that particular store's website where I will find it.

Why are these major outlets shooting themselves in the foot?

Surely anything online should be available in the store?

When one goes online there is carriage to pay and one cannot judge sizes or colours online accurately and, worst of all, once you have placed an order online one gets bombarded with unwanted emails both from them and all the people they pass one's email address on to.

Leeds is a vibrant and popular shopping city. What will it be like when all the stores have closed? Will it be like Bradford - just bars, betting shops and amusement arcades?
