Settle hope to bring in Harker as club coach

Settle Cricket Club has recently come to the end of its poorest season in the last eight years but they are hoping to persuade ex-Cumberland CC coach/selector Graham Harker to take over the role of club coach for next season.

Club Chairman Malcolm Dodgson said: "I have known Graham for many years and asked him to get involved with five games left with a view to taking over next season.

"The difference has been there for all involved with the club to see.

"We managed to win the last two matches, should easily have won another when requiring ten off five overs with five wickets to spare and had we held our catches would have come close to beating the eventual league winners Blackburn Northern.

"We have struggled since the departure of Stuart and Keith Hornby and have really asked too much of our young players.

"We have an excellent batch of about five 15-18 year-old lads who I am sure will benefit from this year's experience and improve again next year."

The club has decided to delay the decision as to who they will appoint as Pro until they know who is available from this year's squad, and to explore further the possibility of a couple of ex-players returning to the club.

Dodgson said: "Graham's knowledge, experience and enthusiasm would be a huge plus for the club but at the same time he has made it quite plain that he is only prepared to take on the role should the players show the same commitment.

"We are hoping to arrange indoor nets for four weeks in November and I am sure this time will be a period that will hopefully convince Graham that the club is ready to return to the success of recent years."

Of last season Dodgson said: " The season never really got started, having nine games completely washed out. However, we haven't helped ourselves with a lack of commitment from senior players at a time that was always going to be a difficult after Stuart and Keith's departure."

For details of the indoor nets please ring the clubhouse on 01729 822171.
