Award honour for teenagers

Two public-spirited youngsters from Skipton have been praised by the Yorkshire Housing Group - and have been given a unique award.

For the second year running, the housing group has recognised the efforts of young people who make a difference to their communities by awarding them a Positive Social Behaviour Order (PoSBO) - a twist on the ASBO.

Local youngsters Danielle Teal, 13, and Chloe Makinson, 16, were nominated by Caroline Porter, leader for the Youth Inclusion Project, for creating "Drama Queens" - a group which aims to tell young people about the effects of bullying.

Miss Porter said: "Danielle and Chloe approached our team last year with their idea for Drama Queens'. They produced a business plan and, with minimal assistance from us, made links with a further 10 young women in the local area asking for their involvement."

In August the group gave a 30-minute performance of poetry, dance and drama, which had been written and developed by Chloe and Danielle.

Miss Porter added: "They worked very hard all summer planning and organising sessions. As the first show was such a success the group decided to take the performance on tour. In December they performed twice in assemblies at two local primary schools."

Tansy Hepton, interim chief executive of Yorkshire Housing Group, said: "I'm extremely pleased and proud we are continuing with this initiative.

"We have so many young people all around us who have such a positive effect on their communities, yet seem to go unnoticed. The vast majority of teenagers are excellent role-models and PoSBOs are a fantastic way of recognising their achievements."
