Landmark hit by vandalism

Police in Settle are keeping a close watch on Castleberg Rock after alcohol bottles and litter were found.

North Yorkshire Police have told Settle Town Council there is a growing problem with young people congregating there, mainly at weekends, and causing damage to surrounding property.

Castleberg Rock is a local landmark which is reached by a footpath.

PC Dave Burgess told the council: "There is a lot more litter, bottles and mess up there these days and we have had reports of some of these children throwing rocks at garage doors. Some of these have missed and smashed car windscreens.

"They are generally congregating up there at weekends and although we know they go there it is difficult to catch them.

"They can see the police car coming from a long way off and run off. We're doing our best, but can't be around 24/7."

Police said youngsters had been breaking into the wooden building attached to Zion Church. Three young people were caught in the building last summer and arrested but the Crown Prosecution Service did not press charges.

Settle Town Council mayor Coun David Heather said the council would look into tidying up the site. "It is in our domain and we need to do something about it," he said.

Imagine the scene...a brightly coloured Police car with "Crime Busters" stickers all over it, driving along the very narrow Castleberg Lane..while the youngsters at the top of the Rock look down in scorn at the strong arms of the law. Whatever happened to the softly softly approach..a little cunning and stealth ? Dixon of the Dock Green would have made a better go at the job.

Kids have been assembling at the top of Castleberg rock for years on end and causing nuisance, throwing down water bombs and whatever else they could put their hands on. Beer, fags, drugs, noise, abuse hurled at passers-by. The locals knew well enough about the problem..so why not the Police with their "fingers on the pulse of the community"? Perhaps someone rang the "Force" twelve months ago, but some one in the office has only just listened to the answerphone.
It begs the question why the Police need to go by noisy car, when the Police station is only about 150 yards way and there is a short cut. No don't answer that question, as we all know the answer already

Hi,
As a kid growing up on The Green, Settle my mates and myself used to play on The Rock, in the woods, on the fields all around this area. At Cubs in the Drill Hall we used The Rock for many different pursuits. But, we NEVER went to wreck anything, .
What I'm trying to say Settle is, " You are getting these problems because the youth of today is different, not for the better either. BUT, Settle has not changed in all these years, if anything it has gone backwards.
