Conversion sparks 'ghetto' fears
Conversion of houses in Skipton's Broughton Road into flats could turn the area into a ghetto, it was feared this week.
Plans to convert a disused newsagents at 62 Broughton Road into three flats was approved, in spite of the concerns of residents and the ward councillor.
At Craven District Council's Planning Committee, Skipton West councillor Polly English said she feared the area was turning into a ghetto.
"There are concerns about the future occupancy of the area and the possibility of anti-social behaviour. Are we ghettoising the area? My personal preference is for a family home rather than more flats, but unfortunately this type of housing seems to be put into one area of the town."
Councillors also heard from the Broughton Road Residents Association who expressed fears about the increased number of cars in an area already short of parking.
But the application, which had the support of a 45-name petition, had not raised any objections from highways and complied with the council's policy of transforming empty buildings into homes.

How I wish Polly English would just grow up. Were talking about three flats. And how many extra cars are likely to appear by building three flats.

Where does Polly English mention anything about parking?
Was it not the Residents Association that brought parking issues up?
Maybe they should all grow up?

I find the local councillor publicly calling the area where I live a Ghetto deeply offensive and unnecessary.
She should try living in the area before making unfounded statements, sure some [italic]parts[/italic] of the area could do with some cosmetic updates but its one of the most neighbourly places I have lived with a strong community.
Maybe she doesn’t want the votes of those residing in the Ghetto?

What a ridiculous argument? In continental Europe more than 50% of people live in flats, bought or rented, rather than houses. Are you trying to say that half of Europe is one big ghetto? Get real. Flats are an economical way of living, especially considering spiralling housing prices. It's simply a question of mutual respect for the other people living in the building and not building the interior walls with cardboard.

With respect to comments made by Chris. The quote you refer to says "Are we ghettoising the area?"
This is completely different to your claim of "publicly calling the area where I live a Ghetto"
We can all choose to interpret and put a slant on any comment.
All I can say, that compared to other areas of Craven, we are very lucky to have such a hard working and caring Councillor representing us.
And yes, I have had my disagreements with her. But this is just a cheap shot.
I think the point was that
some areas of town have all the social housing, others don't. How many social housing flats are there in Rockwood, Raikes or Gargrave Road?

I was at the planning meeting, and what Polly said was that she could see merits on both sides, but she was concerned about the number of houses (often 2 up 2 down) which have been changed into flats, and I, as a local resident, am fed up with having all the social housing in our area. By transforming this property into 3 flats this could add to the problem.
We are not talking Mr Hamburgh about the sort of flats which will be built and sold in the new Mills conversion which are on sale at £175,000 each, but the chance that these will be another 3 flats devoted to "social" housing and we have enough of these down here thankyou.
I agree with the previous post, Where are the houses devoted to Social Housing in Raikes, Rockwood etc????
Tell me one? there are none!!
So despite Broughton Road being a village community this community will be undermined AND ghettoised if this continues.
More power to Polly English's elbow, at least she tells it how it is!
