A campaign is gathering steam for a late night train service between Leeds and Skipton.

An internet petition on the Prime Minister's website has so far received more than 300 signatures and nearly 2,500 people have joined a group supporting a late night service on popular social networking site Facebook.

We thought there might be some demand, but we never knew it would be so high. Now we want as many people as possible to sign the petition.

Martin Chalk

Campaigners want two late night weekend services returning from Leeds to Skipton, at 1.30am and 3am.

Currently, the last train back to Skipton leaves Leeds at 11.18pm and it is claimed there is a significant demand for later trains.

The petition reads: "Many people from up and down the Skipton train line enjoy a good night out in Leeds every Friday and Saturday night. The only trouble is the night has to be cut short to catch the last train back."

It adds that the aim of the petition is to try to convince the Government and the train companies that there is a high demand for two late night trains back along the Skipton line.

Martin Chalk, 27, of Bingley, started the campaign following a night out in Leeds last year.

He attended a gig with friends, but had to leave the concert early to catch the last train home.

"We just found it ridiculous. The train was really busy too; it was jam-packed. That was when we started the group and the petition followed on from that."

Mr Chalk said he had been surprised by how big the response had been.

"We thought there might be some demand, but we never knew it would be so high. Now we want as many people as possible to sign the petition."

A spokesman for Northern Rail, which operates the service, said: "Where there is a demand for an increase in services, it's always something to look at. One of the things you have to be careful of is that quite often evenings are used for engineering work.

"There's a whole host of issues to look at, such as funding and the availability of rolling stock. One of the first things to consider is the demand and whether there's a significant cost."

Tim Calow, chairman of the Aire Valley Rail Users Group, said that later services along the Aire Valley route were one of his group's long-term objectives.

"Northern Rail's track access agreement doesn't include running trains between midnight and 6am and it would be a complicated process to change it.

"One possible, more practical solution that we've looked at in the past is a late night bus service that calls at all the railway stations on the route. There are night buses in Leeds on some routes and this would be a natural extension of that."

Mr Chalk said he would back a bus service as a possible alternative to the proposed trains.

"In London there are regular bus services all night, I don't see why that couldn't happen here."

It would not happen as Traincrew would refuse to work it.

We are constantly subjected to abuse and anti social behaviour on the late night trains. The state of the trains at the end of a journey are a disgrace. They are covered in food, liquids and usually vomit in more than one location.

Nobody in their right mind would want to travel like this (but it is amazing the states of people who board the trains at this time ).

You can sign as many petitions as you like. You have more chance of platting fog than getting anyone to work a train at 1.30am. Some of the dross that travels around here deserve cattle trucks not trains. If you can afford to go to Leeds to get **** get a cab home.

I sympathise with Traincrew. I bet it's a nightmare -carriages full of drunken idiots. Put the effort into opening the Skipton Colne rail link, not pampering the late night booze crews.

If you seriously believe that the company, its staff and the police would allow this you are living in a world of pure fantasy. Late trains are horrific to say the least; the fighting, the vomitting, the urinating, the vandalism. Half the travellers deserve locking up, never mind taken home. Generally you get what you deserve, behave like humans and you'll get treated like humans, behave like pigs and you'll deserve to wallow in sh**e.

Come on Mr Chalk.

Here is a chance for a debate but you do not seem very forthcoming.

It looks like you do not have much support.

Or are you afraid that what we are saying will be your un-doing?

Sensible people who have had the misfortune to have had to travel on a late train know what we are talking about. We sympathise with them. However it seems that the binge drinking anti social mob don't have the capacity to argue their case. Its easy to sign a petition. Can you not argue your corner?

Maybe people who actually ventured further than Skipton for their night out would be more apreciative of the service. I agree, it is not an enjoyable experience, getting the 11.18 train, but more services would encourage more responsible drinking as everyone would not be rushing to get the only 'late' train back. Ill informed comments such as above due nothing to encourage a sensible debate.

Daz, how can you call our comments il informed. We actually have to work these services. I think that more than qualifies us to comment. I do enjoy nights out further affield than skipton but I remain in charge of my senses and do not drink to excess. I enjoy my time out but I would never take my family on the last trains from Leeds as I would fear for their safety.

Maybe if the drunken idiots carried on these services had some respect for their bodies and the lives of others then we might be able to progress.

Dear Traincrew
You've lost me there? I am on your side and was supporting your comments? Look again!

I have been on the "late" train home many times now. Only after gigs I may add, I'm only 17. Usually when around town i feel intimidated by drunks, and often cross away from them. However every time i have been on the last night train i have had no problems. Most of them quite pleasant infact, and having a laugh and a joke with the conducters. Yes i appreciate that a couple may vomit or urinate, but not the majority. You shouldn't punish everyone because a couple of people drank too much!

I'd also like to complain because there isn't a railway at all where I live, can you please install one and put a late night service on that too? cheers.

I have been to many gigs in leeds that I have had to leave early because of train times. I would like to see an increased service-maybe a midnight train would be easier. I fully understand the train crews concerns and how about the option of not allowing people who are too drunk to board the train. Then the sensible people can enjoy a comfortable ride home and the traincrew dont have to worry about any drunkards causing trouble.

i dont think they should be any trains are 11.18 my husband is a conductor on this line and hes always getting verbal abuse, assalt, clearing sick ect why should he and other work trains so late if people want to travel so far then pay for a taxi and dont expect people to work these ridicilious hours waiting for people to come out of the night clubs dont people think that these train drivers and conductors have family toget home to WHAT A JOKE

Well I certainly agree that there is demand for a late night service. I've had many fantastic nights out in Leeds but they have all resulted in a £25 taxi fare home. It would be great to just be able to spend a few quid and get home. Even if the rail operator made the fare slightly higher, it would be far cheaper than getting a taxi.
