Tories gain one Craven Council seat but fail to take control

The Conservatives failed to take overall control of Craven District Council as the results came in today.

The Tories needed to win nine of the 11 seats up for election to gain control, but fell just short of their target, taking eight.

Only one seat changed hands, with Conservative candidate Pam Heseltine regaining control of Skipton East from the Liberal Democrats.

The first Labour Party candidates to stand for local council seats in Craven in over a decade failed to make an impact, trailing in last in each of the five wards they contested.

Of the 11 seats being contested, the Conservatives took eight, the Liberal Democrats two, and one other candidate, David Ireton, retaining his seat in Ingleton and Clapham.

The results mean that the council now comprises 15 Conservative, nine Independents, five Liberal Democrats and one other.

Poor old lib dems .Perhaps they will realise that joe public can see through the spin half truths, distortion,fa
lse claims and **** lies on their election rag.How 6 cllrs out of 30 have managed to run the council beggars belief.Never mind now reduced to 5,they can have group meetings in a phone box while dreaming up their next move to try and fool the public.Dream on.

Can we stop repeating that Labour candidates haven't stood for a decade before this election? There have been Labour candidates in Skipton South and Skipton East this decade.

(Also you may want to check your results page as you currently have a Labour candidate wrongly labelled as a conservative!!)

Realist - pity you don't comment as your name suggests.

It is impossible for 6 Councillors to run the Council. 16 are needed.

Therefore, working on your calculations, we will now have 1 Independent Councillor running the Council, as he is alligned to the Tories.

And after all, what was the best election day for the tories in 20+ years, they still failed to get outright control of one of their top 10 national targets - in what should be a safe rural / market town district.

What I find amusing is that being a council member seems to run in families!
I'm sure we'll be seeing that statue even though there are greater needs!

Oh well. Good news for Craven if you are retired and own your own home.

Very bad news for everyone else. Especially if you need a house or a job.

Still, we will have plenty of green fields.

Gemma pity you cant see sarcasm. My point being the lib dems put out leaflets claiming to have given money for this, saved that done everything thats ever happened in Craven while trying to fool us that they are in charge.3 new cllrs elected, majorities increased, seats held and Wannabe M P hangs on by much reduced votes.Good Tory night all round.Must get another round in.Hic!

    Realist,

Unlike the Tories who claimed to have saved Skipton Hospital, funded community transport, kept Council Tax down, sorted out a housing allocations policy, etc. etc

    All this whilst in opposition?

    Realist / Gemma,

Let's all be realistic here. The colour of the rosette pre-election has little or nothing to do with how the successful candidate acts post-election.

Far from listening and expressing the views of local people all will follow party politics set from party HQ; all will claim any successful policies to be their brainchild and all will seek to blame and failures on the policies adopted by others in previous terms.

As the stuff about 'first Labour candidates...in over a decade' is still there, here's an article of yours from 2004:

    http://archive.crave

    nherald.co.uk/2004/5

    /14/100679.html

That one was fairly inaccurate too as we'd had a candidate in Skipton East two years previously.

There is a story there - it was the first time we'd fielded multiple candidates in over a decade - but what you currently have is inaccurate. As was your earlier article which said we 'couldn't be bothered'.

    Well done Duncan and Labour.

Not only did you get stuffed in the polls, you have also handed control of the District to the Tories.

Lets hope we don't see you for another 10 years.

I fail to see how Labour handed control to the Tories by fielding candidates. Pam Heseltine's vote in Skipton East totalled more than her Lib-Dem and Labour opponents combined. What I want to know is why former Lib-Dems became "independent" overnight, whilst retaining control of the Council. Could the Raving Herald investigate that?

    We didn't.

I think you will find the Lib Dem defections took place in 1997 (over 10 years ago) and only 3 remain (Carl Lis, Stephen Place and Ken Hart). Of the 3, 1 (Ken Hart) is now aligned to the Conservatives. The others remain Independent.

Equally, 2 Conservatives have also since become Independent - (R. Heseltine & D. Ireton)

All will probably have their own reasons, but no doubt didn't get their own way at some stage rather than having an idealogical reason.

Gemma. If you see A Fawcetts blurb it reads.Lib Dems continue to give Settle Swimming Pool funding!Lib Dems recently approved spending £136000 on Settle Town Hall.Lib Dems have already overturned decision to close Skipton Hospital!Lib Dems give funding to Victoria Hall(not theatre).Lib Dems have increased recycling from 9% to 30% Blah Blah Blah.Where the Independents have been for the last 6 yrs goodness knows.Tory majority in Settle increased from 14 to 380.Read it and weep!

Gemma and Grumpy old man. Before i go.2002 Lib Dems on CDC under Beth Graham no 9.2008 under Wannabe M P P English no 5.Get my drift.

    Realist,

You choose the things you want to see.

A Fawcett's leaflet was correct. Lib Dems in coallition with the Independents brought all the initiatives in as you state. Although only 6 in number, they held 3 of the 6 Portfolio positions plus the Deputy Leader position.

Ask the Management Board at Victoria Hall who got them the money? Who pushed through the money for the pool? Who just agreed to the revamp of the Town Hall? All Lib Dem policies - backed up by Independents.

We don't need to lie, unlike the Tory leaflet which claimed to have done everything from the position of opposition.

As for your 3 new Councillors - 1 is an 80 year old man who replaces a retiring wannabe MP, 1 is someone with a criminal record and the other is a recycled Member who gets voted out every 4 years.

    Finally

2002 - P English was the Group Leader and got the 9 elected, not beth Graham.

Sit back and have your moment of glory. We will be waiting for the inevitable catastrophe.

    Gemma,

    I'm afraid I don't
    get your drift
. Your posting from Monday makes no sense whatsoever. Is it a cryptic crossword clue ?

As for the rest of the postings they seem to have descended into a playground squabble.
My candidates bigger than your candidate...

Come on boys - play nicely. It's only local politics. It's not real life you know !

Ah at last Gemma you admit your merry lot are in a coalition. For two months the Lib Dem spin machine maintains they did it all on their own. When in Skipdale last week i asked where Lib Dems H Q was;i followed map left then right then left again till i found 2 queues the longest queue was for the chippy! Then i bought a book called (Lib Dems the glory years);smallest book i have ever seen now made onto video tape in beta max running time 5 mins.Whats the difference between Nick Clegg and gypsy rose lee?One talks rubbish about changing your luck to a new life full of hope and promise while keeping a straight face and the other sits in a tatty booth on Blackpool prom.Oh dear i really must go.
