Settle cloud has ‘Silvey’ lining in derby at Applegarth
Settle's overseas player Bret Silvey in action against Earby on Saturday.
Settle's overseas player Bret Silvey in action against Earby on Saturday.

Despite the welcome return of Earby's professional Ali Azmat, it was Settle pro Bret Silvey who did much of the damage as the Dalesmen beat their rivals in a keenly contested early season derby at Applegarth.

Settle lost the toss and were put in to bat on what looked a difficult damp track.

This proved to be the case with Azmat bowling spin all through the innings.

Runs were hard to come by but Silvey did an excellent job keeping the scoreboard ticking over, acquiring 61 from 92 deliveries. His knock included seven boundaries.

He was well supported by opener Matthew Wildman (19), Robbie Preston (20), Tom Davidson (18), Chris Gemmel (16) and Jeffrey Ellis (11) the visitors finishing on 158-6.

Azmat was the pick of the Earby bowlers, taking 2-51 in 22 overs, with skipper Stephen Hipgrave and Adam Yates taking one wicket each.

Earby were in the hunt from the start but once Azmat fell for 30 it looked a tall order. However, Nigel Hodge contributed a fighting 35 and the result was in doubt up until the 40-over mark. Jonathan Martin (14), Yates (12) and Adil Khan (10) all scored in double figures for Earby.

Adam Gowland bowled an excellent spell for Settle picking up four wickets, leaving Earby 20 short of victory. Silvey also took a pair of wickets and David Morrell, Davidson and Ellis all took one wicket each as Earby finished on 139-9.

Earby played without one of its key contributors, wicketkeeper and opening batsman David Watson, who has left the club to play for Horwich in the Bolton League.

That meant that 14-year-old Ryan Sumner got his start as wicketkeeper for Earby. Sumner had a bat against Settle and scored two not out.

"I think he's proved his worth to the side," said Earby treasurer John Heald.

Settle have also bedded in a number of youngsters into the team.

The average age of the Settle team has dropped dramatically this season to around 25 and on Saturday they put out four U-18s.

Settle's ground fielding was of a high standard and the bowlers are seeing the benefit of runs being saved in the field.

Settle have now won two out of three games but face a stiff test this Saturday at the Marshfield when they host all-conquering Cherry Tree.

Earby travel to Great Harwood on Saturday.

Barnoldswick continued their successful start to the season, when they recorded their third win in four matches with an 84-run victory at Whalley last Saturday.

Batting first, Barlick kick-started their innings in fine fashion when openers Matthew Nutter and Alamgir Anwar established a first-wicket partnership of 75.

Nutter hit 25 off 43 balls before falling at 75-1. It wasn't long after that Anwar was caught with Barlick at 78-2.

Anwar had a knock of 45, which included two fours and five sixes.

Clinton Peake and Paul Beech then built a fine third-wicket partnership.

Peake hit a half-century, scoring 52 runs off 65 balls which included four fours and four sixes. Beech grafted away, scoring 15 off 50 balls.

Daniel Oldfield and John Hall were the only other players to reach double figures as both men scored ten runs.

Barlick reached a total of 194-9 as Whalley's Stephen Booth mopped up the wickets in Barnoldswick's middle order and tail. His figures were 6-24 in eight overs.

Whalley's reply stuttered as Barlick's Zahid Iqbal bowled opener Martin Davies out for three and then Anwar claimed the scalp of the other opener, Declan Fitzhenry, who went without scoring.

Struggling on 3-2 in the third over, Lee Kearsley helped to steady Whalley's innings, scoring 43 off 80 balls.

However he did not get enough support and the merciless Barlick bowlers bowled the home side out for just 110.

Peake was the pick of the bowlers, taking 3-33 in 15 overs. Anwar and Iqbal also took two wickets each.

Barnoldswick host Read at Victory Park on Saturday.

That's the best headline pun I've seen in the Craven Herald for some time.
