Thornton bowlers baffle Oakworth batsmen
The pendulum swung slightly to the advantage of the batsmen, in the Mewies Solicitors Craven & District Cricket League with several scores over or very near to the 200 mark.
In the First Division Thornton entertained Oakworth and sent them packing with a 51-run defeat. The Booth Bridge Lane side were restricted to 122 in their innings. Top scorer was "dragged out of retirement - again" legend Brian Laycock who made 40 as Michael Scarborough was the best bowler with 5-27. The Cure Hill side crashed to 39-8 before a ninth wicket partnership of 31 between Joe Copperwaite and Andy Dawson brought some respectability to the score.
Laycock rounded off his good day with the last two wickets in eight balls without conceding a run. Mark Laycock 4-30 and Mark Paxton 4-38 had done the earlier damage.
Leaders Crossflatts continue with their 100 per cent record after they saw off Cononley by five wickets. The South Craveners batted first and made 129 with youngster Freddie Osadzenko scoring 39 as Mick Addy 5-35 and Q Ayub 4-32 did the damage with the ball. Flatts skipper Mick Brooksbank made 47 to see his side to their target.
Bradley are still undefeated, a point behind the leaders, as they saw off Glusburn by 38 runs at the Playing Fields. The home side were dismissed for a modest 132 with Neil Andrews top scoring with 33. The visitors were then shot out for 94 with Matty Simpson claiming 5-39 and James Heseltine 3-19.
Cullingworth move into third spot after a 28 run triumph at Embsay. The Shires Laners lost talisman Stephen Speak to injury after bowling only two overs. Scott Robinson took on the mantle of senior bowler and finished with 4-46 off 22 overs. Skipper Simon Bailey reached 4-35 off 12 overs.
New recruit Nigel Brett made 34 and Chris Welch 30, before George Fletcher (25 not out) and Dave Robinson (7 not out) put together a crucial last wicket undefeated partnership of 23 Embsay were progressing very well at 103-3 then lost seven wickets adding a further 10 runs. Robinson was the destroyer in chief with 6-26 off 18 overs. Duncan Ward made 50 for the losers.
Cowling travelled to Sandy Lane and recorded their second victory of the season. The Greenwood Park side went first and made 126 with M Arshad taking 6-26 as Wasim Aktar made 37 and Wayne Exley 36. The visitors strolled to a comfortable seven wicket win with Gareth Frankland making 48 not out and skipper Ben Thurston 36.
Bingley Congs got their first win of the season at home to bottom side Barrowford. Chris Hemsley took 6-33 as the Beckfoot side dismissed the red rose side for a disappointing 122. He followed this with 37 to go with skipper Andy Copping's 46 which saw them to a five wicket win.
Leaders of the Second Division, Chatburn figured in a high scoring tie at Long Lee. The Keighley side went first and amassed 221-8 in their overs with Richard Ayrton making a splendid 119 not out. Richard Shovelton made 68 as the Ribble Valley side also closed on 221-8. Shahbaz Ahmed followed his all ten of last week with 5-79.
Ingrow St John's were in fine fettle on their visit to Sutton. They blasted 223-7 in their overs with G Wright making 55, Colin Bottomley 51, A Razza 49 and Colin Dyson 30 not out. The ten man homesters were shot out for 95 in reply with Jonathan Green taking 3-2 and Bottomley 3-12.
Glusburn II are the sole leaders of the Third Division after they beat Airedale II and Long Lee II lost to Cowling II.
The Park Field side restricted the Keighley side to 89-9 in the innings with Kevin Hird taking 4-16. The home side romped to a seven-wicket victory in the 23rd over.
Just up the road Cowling II battled their way to 132 with M Zulfiqar scoring 44 as S Razak took 6-50 off 21 overs. The Keighley slumped to 72 all out with Sajid Shafait taking 6-12 in 5.4 overs.
Skipton CI had field day against Barrowford II at Sandylands. Ian Burke with a magnificent 115, Jon Sharpe 72no and Simon Bates 47no saw the home side to 253-1 in their overs. The Bull Holme side slumped to a miserable 36 all out with John Stuttard taking 6-17 and John Drake 3-17.
Tim Cowburn took 7-12 as Gargrave shot Ingrow St John's II out for 71 at Street Lane. The visitors lost two wickets taking the spoils.
In the basement battle Carleton recorded their first victory of the season at Ramper Park. They went first and 177 with Gareth Wooler scoring 50. He then took 6-31 as visitors Embsay II were dismissed for 103 of which Nas Hussain scored 49.
Tinashe Gomwe had a big say in the defeat of Fourth Division leaders, Cullingworth II by Haworth WE. He took 7-48 as the homeside made 214-8 in their overs with Alistair Campbell top scoring with 44. He followed with 90 not out as the Bronte side got home by two wickets.
Crossflatts II were unable to take advantage of that slip as they went down by two wickets in the first game to be played at Eldwick & Gilstead this season. Flatts were dismissed for 45 and the home side replied with 48-8.
Riddlesden join Cullingworth II on nine points after seeing off Bradley II at Stockbridge. The visitors were shot out for 56 with no player reaching double figures as G Ayub took 6-24 and N Kamal 3-23. The Keighley side slumped to 8-3 before M Shakil with 34 edged them to victory by 6 wickets.
M Foster made 57 as Thornton II posted 182-7 over at Ingrow II. Then Aide Stokes made 45 as the Hainworth side got home by three wickets with Tim Gates taking 4-69.
Cononley II were the only side at the head of the Fifth Division table to lose. Something had to give as they entertained Sutton II who were also in the top four. The visitors made 151 with Gary Williams making 40 and Paul Williams 39 as J Grainger took 5-28. The home side were knocked over for just 84 with G Williams being the best bowler with 4-16.
Glusburn III ran riot as they walloped 252-7 up at Haworth WE II. John Golson made 72 and Phil Taylor 54 as Andy Parker took 3-68. The Penistone Park side were dismissed for 155 with G Palmer scoring 41 and J Aldred 39 as S Brown took 4-37.
Skipton CI II were in the same run mould as their first team. They harvested 230 on their travels to Foulridge II. John Carlisle led the way with 74 ably assisted by veteran Mel Mason 48 and S Smith 47 as Stephen Kegg took 6-57. The nine man Noyna side were dismissed for 99 with Smith taking 5-43.
Gargrave II toiled for 45 overs to get an Oakworth II wicket. They managed to get Brannan Lawn who had made 130 in the last over. He and L Chapman 52 not out saw their side to 217-1. In reply Gargrave II slumped to 25-6 before recovering to 96 all out. Ollie Stell claimed 4-22 for the winners.
