Davidson’s half-century leads Settle to victory

Tom Davidson inspired a Settle victory over previously unbeaten Cherry Tree at the Marshfield. His maiden first team half-century came in the nick of time as Settle were struggling in their run chase.

The visitors had first use of a good track as Ahmer Mirza and Scott Friend put on 137 for the first wicket. Settle's patience was rewarded as Mirza (57) and pro Zeeshan Pervez (9) were removed by Jeff Ellis in quick succession.

The visitors were on 150-2 and still in sight of a good total with just under 20 overs remaining. Ellis captured his third wicket before Adam Gowland removed Friend (89) and the innings lost momentum. Ellis proved a handful all afternoon and finished with 6-48. Gowland wrapped up the tail to finish with 4-66 as Cherry Tree posted 200. David Worthington's stumping off Gowland ensured the bonus bowling points.

A rain-adjusted target of 142 looked an unlikely prospect as Settle slumped to 50-5 thanks mainly to a fine four-wicket spell from Jon Baldwin. But with Paul Taylor playing the anchor role, Davidson was allowed to play a more attacking game, his 50 including seven fours and a six. The 72-run partnership was ended when Taylor was caught behind with just 20 needed for victory.

Two more quick wickets fell leaving Settle still ten short with two wickets left. Gowland broke the tension in the penultimate over by launching a big six into the old orchard with Settle claiming a maximum point win with five balls remaining.

Barnoldswick are now level on points with Settle after they lost by six wickets to Read on Saturday.

Barlick opener Matthew Nutter had a fine knock of 34 to top score for his side. Unfortunately only two other players scored in double digits as the home side crashed to 104 all out as Jon Harvey (7-51) did the damage with the ball for Read.

Set a revised target of 99, Read's two openers and Harvey (34) allowed the visitors to reach the revised target. Barlick pro Clinton Peake was the pick of the bowlers on 2-15. Barlick have a bye in the first round of the Ramsbottom Cup on Saturday.

Earby are still without a win this season as they went down to an eight-wicket defeat at Great Harwood on Saturday.

Batting first Earby were a bit slow out of blocks and were in trouble when professional Ali Azmat was out for just two.

Nigel Hodge played a steady innings scoring 23 off 52 balls and Adam Yates had a fine knock of 32 but Earby finished on just 125 all out. Syed Shahabuddin took 5-58.

In reply Great Harwood passed Earby's total with ease behind the unbeaten scores of 48 for Shahabuddin and 42 for Russell Whalley.

Earby travel to Whalley for their Ramsbottom Cup tie on Saturday.
