Embsay earn pulsating win
On a glorious day when the temperature soared, the first round of the Wynn Cup was duly completed.
The holders, Cullingworth, made short work of visitors Haworth Road who were despatched for just 60 with David Robinson returning bowling figures of 3-1. In reply Gareth Marshall 35 not out and Nigel Brett 32 not out took the Roydwood Terrace side through to the second round by ten wickets.
Beaten finalists, Oakworth, were also in fine fettle over at Chatburn. The Ribble Valley side went first and were dismissed for 57 in 23.1 overs with extras being the top scorer with 18. Graham Rankin bowled superbly to finish with 6-23 off 11.1 overs. Oakworth raced to the next round winning by nine wickets in 9.1 overs.
First Division Thornton made heavy weather of beating Third Division Carleton at Ramper Park. The home side went first and made a modest 107 with Jack Laycock taking 4-28. The Booth Bridge Laners were staring defeat in the face at 82-9 after 34 overs. The last pair Marc Laycock and Danny Ibbotson gradually chipped away and reached the last over wanting four to win. Three dot balls and then Laycock crashed a six to take the game He finished on 23 not out.
Embsay pulled off a fine victory at Sandy Lane. The home side went first and made 208-6 in their overs with Wasim Aktar scoring 61 as Duncan Ward claimed 3-57. The Shires Laners lost a wicket at 13 before skipper Simon Bailey and Ward put on 90 before the latter was out for 38. Bailey was joined youngster Nathan Bailey and the score progressed to 151 where the skipper perished for a fine 72. Robinson made 38 and it was left to John Hillary with 34 not out and the ageless Bob Bateman 9 not out to see their side to victory with an over to spare.
Crossflatts had their colours lowered for the first time this season at Glusburn. Flatts went first and rattled up 222-7 with Mick Brooksbank top scoring on 47. Undaunted the Park Field side screamed to victory by three wickets led by Sean Williamson with 55.
Second Division Ingrow put a fine struggle at Bradley before going down by 30 runs. James Heseltine's 59 helped the home side to 207-9 in their overs. Adie Parker was the backbone of the Keighley side's reply making 50. Wickets fell at regular intervals before a bit of tail wagging got the total to 177 as Matty Simpson finished with 5-43 off 12 overs.
Skipton CI entertained Sutton at Sandylands and were restricted to 113 with skipper Paul Mason top scoring with 25 as David Snowden took 4-21. The South Craveners slumped to 18-3 but Justin Holdsworth's 46 turned things around to set up a four-wicket victory.
First Division Cononley fell at the first hurdle by the narrow margin of ten runs to Second Division Long Lee. The Keighley side posted 195-8 in their innings with Matt Taylor making 55. Shahbaz Ahmed continued his fine run with the ball as he took 5-11 off seven overs to undermine the hosts for 185. Cowling also progressed with Airedale being unable to raise a team.
The draw for the second round to be played on Sunday, June 1: Haworth v Long Lee, Bradley v Oakworth, Embsay v Cullingworth, Wilsden v Gargrave, Thornton v Sutton, Foulridge v Barrowford. Glusburn and Cowling have byes.
