Re-launch for Trueman statue project

A sculptor has started work on modelling the full size bronze statue of Fred Trueman - exactly two years after the Yorkshire cricket icon died.

Graham Ibbeson has completed the metal framework in his studio in Barnsley and this week started laying on the clay.

Tuesday saw the second anniversary of the death of the Yorkshire and England fast bowler, who lived in Flasby, near Gargrave. He was 75.

Mr Ibbeson, who has also sculptured retired cricket umpire Dickie Bird and the late comedian Les Dawson, said the work on the bronze of Fred Trueman was a "labour of love".

"I've started to lay on the clay - it will work out at about a third of a ton when completed. It should take about two months before it is finished and ready to be cast in bronze," he said.

The cost of the statue, expected to be erected in Skipton High Street, is estimated to be in the region of £80,000.

"We are nowhere near the final figure yet, but we must move things forward. This is a positive milestone," said Mr Ibbeson.

There is to be a re-launch of the project which will be spearheaded by a professional fundraiser.

Craven District Council has pledged £15,000 and Skipton Building Society is backing the project with £5,000. Support is also promised from Yorkshire County Cricket Club, Northern Rail and Skipton Town Council.
