Celebrity judges give their verdict on lawyer’s chutney

Solicitor Chris Varley has won an award – for his chutney-making talents.

Chris, a partner with local law firm Walker Foster, took the overall prize at the Chutney Festival, staged at the Tempest Arms, Elslack, on Saturday.

His chutney was praised by celebrity judges Clarissa Dickson Wright – one half of the Two Fat Ladies - and Elaine Lemm, a respected food and drink writer.

Chris won a £50 gift voucher and a framed ‘Keep Calm and Eat Chutney’ poster.

He will have his winning chutney professionally made for sale at Individual Inns’ five pubs by local chutney maker Eloise Sunley, proprietor of Bumbly Bees in Salterforth.

Proceeds from the sales will go to Carers Resource, based on the Broughton Hall Estate.

The category winners were: professionals - Kate Peill of the Wheatley Arms, Ilkley (pickle); budding chefs - Jade Lee and Louis Jay-Pope from Nelson & Colne College (spiced beetroot and orange); women - Michelle Nutter (pineapple, fig and ginger); odd and unusual - Catherine Jones (no-cook apple chutney); children - Bethany Cutforth; men - Chris Varley (chutney); highly commended - Lesley Howarth (apple and grape).
